LMMS tutorial on where to get VST instruments or effects and how to add them.
There are many great instruments and effects not included with LMMS. An excellent site for finding both free and commercial VSTs is http://kvraudio.com/. If you wish to use VSTs in LMMS, you may have to install lmms-vst in the Synaptic Package Manager (if your using Ubuntu).
Free VST instruments:
The following VST instrument samples were created using LMMS. No additional effects such as reverb or delay were used.- http://chineekong.com/free.htm - The Mini Dizi flute sounds awesome, I use it often. I did not like Mini Erhu as much. Mini Dizi Demonstration:
- http://yohng.com/piano.html - 4Front Piano sounds pretty good. If I did not own a sampled piano I'd use this. 4Front Piano demonstration:
- http://dskmusic.com/ - DSK Strings and DSK Brass sound nice. If I didn't own a sampled orchestra I'd use these. The other instruments are decent but I have not tried them all. DSK Strings demonstration:
Installing an instrument/effect:
- Download a VST and export the archive, the DLL file is the VST.
- Open LMMS. In the top menu, click Edit, then click Settings.
- Click
in the window that pops up. - Copy the path under VST-PLUGIN DIRECTORY.

- Open your file browser and visit the copied path. Put only the DLL file in this folder. *NOTE* effects must be placed in the root directory.

Adding an instrument:
- In the left menu, click
. - Click and drag VeSTige to the Beat+Bassline Editor.
- Click this plugin to open VeSTige settings.

- Click the green folder icon, browse to the location of your instrument and open it.

Adding an effect:
- Click an instrument to open its General Settings window.
- Click the FX tab.
